I read the sad news late last night before going to bed that Star Trek Enterprise has been canceled. The series will end in May. To tell you the truth, it doesn’t surprise me. Last season Enterprise was barely renewed.
When it was announced before this season started that Enterprise would move to Friday nights at 8:00 pm I had severe doubts that the show could make it in that time slot. Even sci-fi fans have a social life and often are doing other things on Friday nights. Also the SciFi channel has a strong lineup of shows on Friday nights.
When you go out on Friday night, it’s much easier to pop in a tape and record an evening of the SciFi channel than it is to record one show on UPN (where is that on the dial?) and a few others on SciFi. Some people would also argue that the quality of Enterprise wasn’t up to the quality of the SciFi offerings (I’m not one of them, by the way). For whatever reasons Enterprise is coming to an end. Enterprise will have lasted only four seasons. Only the original series had a shorter run for a Star trek series.
This Is the End
Here’s what I’d like to see happen in the remaining episodes of Enterprise.
The Prime Directive
The Federation of Planets will be established very soon. Next I’d like to see Archer and crew involved in an incident that forces the Federation to institute the Prime Directive. It should be something so grievous that for centuries Federation members are prohibited from interfering in the development of new planets.
Blow Up the Enterprise
Blow it to smithereens with all hands lost in the explosion. Also show the main characters killed in action (even Hoshi). It’s not that I dislike the ship or its crew, but an end like this will help explain why there is always a ship named ‘Enterprise’ in the Federation fleet.
A Little Bit Vulcan, A Little Bit Human
However the ending isn’t entirely sad. I would have Trip and T’Pol give birth to the very first half-Vulcan half-Human being. With the little tike’s parents killed on the Enterprise, he/she could help solidify the friendship of Earth and Vulcan.
That may sound like a lot to squeeze into a half season of shows, but I think they can do it.
Latest 'Star Trek' Series to End in May
Los Angeles (Reuters) - "Star Trek: Enterprise," the latest incarnation of one of the most storied franchises in televised science-fiction history, will end its four-season run in May, broadcaster UPN said on Wednesday.
UPN said the last episode would air on Friday, May 13. The series generated 98 episodes over its run, although it struggled in the ratings.
The original "Star Trek" gave rise to generations of fans who eagerly took in movies, books, and follow-on television shows like "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager."
"Star Trek: Enterprise" was positioned as a prequel to the original "Star Trek." It starred Scott Bakula and premiered in September 2001.
UPN is a unit of Viacom Inc.
